Invisalign Home Care

Congratulation on starting Invisalign!  Following these instructions will help ensure the success of your treatment.

  • The aligners come in a container that holds one upper and one lower aligner.  They should be worn together and in sequence for 20-22 hours per day.

  • For every additional hour that you do not wear your aligners, it is recommended to add a day to that aligner set to make sure the treatment is progressing as planned.  Teeth do tend to relapse to their original position and will require more time to move if the aligners are not being worn enough hours a day.

  • Avoid the use of NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Advil, Aspirin, Aleve) during your Invisalign therapy because it will slow down the rate of bone remodeling and stall treatment progress.

  • If you are prescribed elastics, you must wear them as much as you are wearing your aligners for optimal results.

  • If you are prescribed a Carriere Distalizer appliance, you will only be wearing one aligner on the arch opposite to the one that has the Distalizer attached to it, together with the elastics.

  • If you feel like the aligners are staining, you can clean them using Retainer Bright tablets for 15 minutes in the morning and brush them under cold water and hand soap if needed.

  • You will be changing your aligners every 7-10 days and every 4-5 days if you are using the vPro+ aligner seater

  • If you had Propel MOPs treatment you may be able to change your aligners every 3 days. Do not use NSAIDs (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, Aspirin).  These medications will reverse the effects of the procedure. Use Tylenol for any discomfort.

  • When you are not using your aligners, keep them in the container to avoid accidentally throwing them out. Replacing aligners takes 7 days, which will slow down your treatment, and costs $50 per aligner.

  • Always keep your previous aligners. In case of aligner loss, you will need to wear the previous tray if you are unable to switch to the next one in the series.

  • Use Chewies as much as possible during the first 3 days to help seat aligners or as prescribed.

  • When you take aligners out to eat, it is best to brush your teeth and rinse the aligners before placing them back in.

  • Carefully examine your aligners for fit.  If you notice that there is a significant space between the aligner and the tooth, please contact the office immediately.  Also contact us, if any of the attachments come off.

  • At the end of orthodontic treatment, the bite may require adjustment (occlusal adjustment).

  • Occasionally, we may have to take additional impressions during the course of the treatment, if one of the teeth stops “tracking” (moving as predicted by the simulation). This is called a Refinement. Your Full Invisalign treatment of more than 14 aligners includes 3 additional sets of refinement impressions.

  • If your teeth aren’t tracking due to your not wearing the aligners as prescribed (noncompliance), there will be an additional fee of $500 for new records.

  • After the treatment is completed, you will need to wear retainers to keep the teeth in their new and improved position.  For the first 7 months, you will wear retainers 20-22 hours per day and after that at night only.  You may be recommended a bonded retainer for your lower or upper teeth.  If you choose to not use the lower bonded retainer, your chance of relapse increases. If you want to make any additional corrections after a relapse due to non-compliance with the retention protocol, a new treatment fee will be discussed.
